A landmark agreement was reached which will transform corporate accountability for human rights and environmental impacts in the EU. The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) gives EU member states 2 yrs to enact laws that will affect nearly 20,000 companies. Companies will be required to identify, prevent or mitigate potential adverse impacts of their activities (including but not limited to-slavery, child labor, labor exploitation, environmental degradation, pollution, and biodiversity loss). Companies will also have to monitor and assess the impact of their value-chain partners including e.g. suppliers, sales, transport, distribution, storage, and waste-management. This agreement came about because of the incredibly movement advocacy of many organizations including WGF grantees Business and Human rights Resource Centre, International Trade Union Confederation, and the international Corporate Accountability Roundtable, who worked to amplify the voices of workers the Global South during the debates in Brussels.
