Co-presidents of DC-based nonprofit Community Change penned an op-ed on the power of grassroots movements to prevent the rise of white supremacy and explosions of violence like the devastating mass shooting in Buffalo, NY. The authors argue for the role of strategic philanthropy in supporting grassroots groups working to address the systemic problems that encourage the growth of hateful, socially-fragmenting ideologies like white supremacy:
“During this frightening time, philanthropy cannot abdicate its responsibility to the communities so many grant makers place at the heart of their missions. As the nation’s racial reckoning took hold two years ago, Ash-Lee Henderson, co-executive director of the grassroots organizing nonprofit Highlander Center, put it this way: ‘Fund us like you want us to win.'”
